Coyotes Run Up Undefeated Season/ Streak Hits 28 |
|
|
Phoenix Union ran up what is considered its greatest basketball record in 1959-60 posting 23 wins and 0 losses and capturing the 'AA' championship and mythical state crown. The Coyote's unbeaten streak was stretched to 28 over a two-year period. Coach Gerald (Wimpy) Jones' cagers ran roughshod over highly touted Camelback and Catalina early in the season and set a single game scoring mark in crushing Tempe, 106-38. Highlights of the season came in the two regular season clashes with arch-rival North Phoenix. In the first contest North, also boasting an unblemished mark and the state's finest offensive star, Dennis Dairman, thrilled some 4000 fans in the Coyote gym before falling in the final minute, 52-48. In their second meeting, the Pack eased past the Mustangs, who were without Dairman, 74-40. |
